What is BOTOX® Cosmetic?
BOTOX® Cosmetic is a formulation of botulinum toxin type A. It is
derived from the bacterium Clostridium botulinum. This bacterium
produces a protein that blocks the release of acetylcholine and
relaxes muscles that with use form wrinkles around the eyes.
How is the BOTOX® Cosmetic administered?
BOTOX® Cosmetic is injected into the muscles that cause facial
creases and wrinkles. Your doctor will determine the muscle(s) in need
of treatment for the desired results.
Does the treatment hurt?
Some patients report minor and temporary discomfort from the injection. BOTOX® Cosmetic is
reconstituted with sterile, preservation-free, normal saline for injection. The neutral pH of the injected
solution, in combination with the fine gauge needle your doctor will use, can help to minimize any injection-
related pain.
When does BOTOX® Cosmetic start to work?
The initial effect of the injection is seen within three days of the treatment and reaches a peak at one to two
weeks-post treatment.
How long does the effect last?
The relief you will feel from a single treatment of BOTOX® Cosmetic will normally be sustained for
approximately three to five months. BOTOX® Cosmetic treatments are needed only three or four times a
year. Symptoms may vary throughout the course of the condition, and so the degree of relief and duration
of effect varies from person to person.
How long can I be treated with BOTOX® Cosmetic?
Treatment with BOTOX® Cosmetic can typically be repeated as long as the patient continues to respond and
does not have a serious allergic reaction. BOTOX® Cosmetic has been used for over 10 years commercially
worldwide. Acceptable safety in long-term treatment has not been conducted.
Although most people continue to respond to BOTOX® Cosmetic injections, some people have experiences a
diminished response over time. There may be several explanations for this:
1. Changes in your condition – If the pattern of your muscle activity changes, your health care provider
may need to inject new muscles and/or change your dose. Identifying and injecting the affected
muscle can be difficult, complicated by the changing pattern of muscle involvement and progression
of the disorder.
2. Setting appropriate expectations - You may believe your first BOTOX® Cosmetic injection was more
helpful than subsequent injections. That’s because your condition was perhaps quite severe when
you had your first injection. Subsequent injections are usually given before your condition becomes
that severe again. Therefore, the relief you experienced with subsequent injections may not have
been as dramatic as the first time.
3. Antibody formation – When foreign proteins, like botulinum toxins, enter your body antibodies may
form. If antibodies to botulinum toxin develop, you may no longer respond to treatment.
How much does BOTOX® Cosmetic cost?
It is recommended to schedule a free consultation to discuss your expectations and to review pricing
estimates. Pricing is based on the amount of BOTOX® Cosmetic injected. We charge $15 a unit.
